Why I chose (and keep choosing) to come to
Animas High School

  • I like the small size of the school--this means that I know the teachers on a first-name basis, and I know the first name of every single person in my grade , (and most of their lastnames, too,) plus many of the names of the students in the other two grades below me. Also, because of the small size, we have small class sizes, which allow us one-on-one time with our teachers.
  • My class, the class of 2013, is going to be the first class to graduate from Animas High School, which is a big deal. We have been with this school since the first year, where it was only us and the teachers- no other grades at all. We have been the guineapigs from day one, and that makes us incredibly close to the faculty.
  •  Unlike bigger high schools, where you may just be a face in the crowd, where all the teachers are teaching 5 classes a day, here, you are your individual person, and your teachers know you, and your strengths and weaknesses. They care about you and how you are doing, and they want to help you be successful.
  • Project-based learning is the way we do things here at AHS. We learn about a subject for a semester, or half a semester, and then spend around 5 weeks or so developing and creating our project. I enjoy this type of learning because we get to learn for a while, and then we get to delve deeper into a subject within what we have been learning to make the project. This makes the projects a lot of fun, because we are researching and creating something that we find interesting, while we are also learning.
  • We are free to make changes within our school. For example, a friend of mine, Joan, and I have started a food and clothing drive for the Durango food bank and homeless shelter. Often times, this would have to be approved by many people, which would take time. Instead what happened is we saw our Assistant-Head-of-School, Jake, walking by, talked to him about it, shot a quick e-mail to Michael Ackerman, Head of School, and within the day, were making posters and sending e-mails out to teachers about it. I doubt it would happen that way, that quickly, in any other high school.
